Escapee caught after pursuit in Calcasieu Parish

Vinton - On October 28, 2011, at approximately 5:38 p.m., a black Lexus passenger car was observed by a state trooper traveling west on Interstate 10 in Sulphur going 99 miles per hour (mph) in a 50 mph zone. The vehicle failed to stop for visual and audible signals and a pursuit began.  The vehicle began passing other vehicles on the shoulder at speeds in excess of 125 mph.  After pursuing the vehicle for approximately 12 1/2 miles, the vehicle exited off the interstate at exit 8.  The vehicle then traveled off the roadway and struck a guardrail located on the off-ramp.

The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.  The Vinton Police Department then removed a female passenger from the vehicle.  Minutes later, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office located the male driver in the Vinton Drainage Ditch, just north of the crash location. The driver was identified as 35-year-old Charles J. Doyle of Sulphur.   Doyle had active warrants out of Calcasieu Parish for escape, burglary, and theft as well as Orange County, TX for felony evading arrest.

While in transport to the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center, Doyle escaped from the custody of Recovery Mission, a rehab center in Alexandria, on October 7, 2011, in Calcasieu Parish.  Doyle was not in the custody of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office at the time of his escape and detectives have been looking for him.

The female passenger was identified as 21-year-old Thea R. Sonnier of Lafayette.  While trying to identify the female passenger, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office found what is believed to be Xanax on her.  Sonnier was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled dangerous substance and booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center.

Doyle was charged by troopers with DWI, reckless operation, aggravated flight from an officer, resisting an officer, passing on the shoulder, driving with a suspended driver's license, speeding 99 mph in a 50 mph zone, and speeding 125+ in a 70 mph zone and was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center.

Through the day today expect hot and mostly sunny conditions. Feels-like temperatures expected to reach between 100-105 this afternoon. I can’t rule out a pop-up afternoon shower, but chances remain low. Most of us will remain dry through the day today and overnight.
