Tulane frat house fire injures firefighter

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans Fire Department spokesman says a fire captain battling a three-alarm blaze was injured when he fell through a floor at an off-campus Tulane University fraternity house where Halloween decorations hindered firefighting.

Capt. Edwin Holmes Jr., says the fire broke out early Sunday at the Zeta Psi house. He says black tarpaulins made it hard to find walls and doors. Holmes says the fire apparently started in or around the kitchen. Flames engulfed the two-story building when the first truck arrived but the fire was controlled in about 90 minutes.

Holmes says the firefighter's injury was apparently in his shoulder or upper arm. He says another firefighter returned to service after treatment for exhaustion and dehydration.
