CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury adopted the resolution to work with the Calcasieu Parish School Board on purchasing and installing school speed limit sign beacons in areas outside of city limits.
Parish Engineer Tim Conner said the flashing beacons are located on all the parish roads in the "unincorporated areas" near schools, but not on state routes.
"This was an opportunity for us to enter an agreement with the School Board where we could install the flashers and if they're willing and agreeable to maintain them," Conner said. "[CPPJ] will be talking to the school board to see if they'll be willing to do their part."
If approved by the CPSB, the school zone speed limit beacons will be installed at Starks High School, Moss Bluff Elementary School, Sam Houston High School, Bell City High School, Kaufman Elementary and Lebleu Settlement Elementary.
"People are more aware of the fact they're entering a school zone which is safer for the students as well," Conner said.
The Police Jury will receive the money from the state's transportation fund to pay for the flashing beacons.
Conner said there is no set date for when the beacons will be installed but he hopes to have something in place by the end of the year.
