Lake Charles, LA (KPLC)- McNeese State put on its strongest show of the season both offensively and defensively as the No. 19 ranked Cowboys punched out a 48-27 Southland Conference victory over Southeastern Louisiana here Saturday night.
It was the league opener for both teams and McNeese ran its overall record to 2-1 while Southeastern fell to 1-3.
Cowboy head coach Matt Viator said that he was pleased with the effort.
"I thought that we had some good plays in all phases," he said. "There were some very good things on the special teams. This was a game that we finished out and we needed to do that."
Among the highlights of the game for the Cowboys were two tailbacks (Andre Anderson and Marcus Wiltz) rushing for over 100 yards each, quarterbacks Cody Stroud and Riley Dodge combining for three tds passing, Shelby Hemenway blocking a Southeastern Louisiana punt, the Cowboys scoring 21 points in 10 minutes in the second half , Darrell Jenkins and Malcolm Bronson intercepting passes and McNeese totaling 446 yards in the game.
McNeese scored the game's first 10 points and was up 24-10 at the end of the half. It was during a 10 minute period at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth that the Cowboys produced three touchdowns to put the game away.
Anderson ran for a game high 118 yards on 15 carries while Wiltz came up with 104 yards on 18 trips. Stroud completed 15 of 23 passes for 145 yards and two tds and Dodge connected on two passes, one for a touchdown.
The Cowboys rushed for a season high 287 yards and had 159 yards passing.
