Man on trial accused of 2nd degree murder

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Opening statements got underway this morning in the 2nd degree murder trial of Jason Morgan accused of killing Roy Edward Wyatt over a bicycle June 7, 2010.

Prosecutor Rick Bryant told jurors the evidence will show that Morgan shot Wyatt in the back after Morgan's brother Darren and others got into a fight over a bicycle.

The defense attorney said it wasn't Jason but his brother Darren who shot Wyatt. Defense attorney Ted Hartman told jurors Darren Morgan is, "a crackhead who didn't have a car and went crazy over the bicycle he needed for transportation."

The defense attorney said Darren is known to have intimidated witnesses, had ties to a local judge and was feared by others-- particularly one witness who pointed to Jason Morgan for the killing.

Hartman said, "Jason Morgan had a family and several cars and would not have risked it all to defend his crackhead brother over a bicycle."

After opening statements, jurors heard calls from Darren Morgan to 911 confessing to the shooting.

It's unclear why Darren would have confessed if Jason committed the shooting.
