McNeese State has moved several notches up in the FCS football poll and Darius Carey has earned Southland Conference and national player of the week honors.
The Cowboys jumped four notches in The Sports Network poll to No. 19 and went up to No. 18 in the coaches poll. McNees is now the highest ranking Southland Conference team as Sam Houston State is ranked No. 20 and Stephen F. Austin is No. 22. Georgia Southern leads the poll.
McNeese is 1-1 on the season after having downed former NAIA power Sioux Falls 31-17 in its home opener last week. The Cowboys open their conference schedule on Saturday by hosting Southeastern Louisiana.
Carey, a junior transfer from North Texas, was named the SLC's special teams player of the week and he also was named the national punt returner of the week by College Football Performance.
Against Sioux Falls, Carey, a native of New Orleans, scored the Cowboys first two tds. He caught a 38 yard td pass from quarterback Cody Stroud for McNeese's first touchdown and then no more than eight minutes later scored on a 68 yard punt return, the 14th longest in the school's history.
On the night the 6-0, 185 pounder totaled 179 all purpose yards as he caught six passes for 92 yards, had 19 yards on kickoff returns and 68 yards on his lone punt return.
He's the third Cowboy to be named a conference player of the week this season. Following the season opening game with Kansas, Stroud was named the SLC's offensive player of the week and defensive back Terence Cahee shared the defensive honor.
