Two Sentenced on charges related to death of Alexus Rankins

The following is a Press Release from the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney's Office:

On September 19, 2011, Judge Clayton Davis sentenced Nina and Rodney Newton on charges related to the shooting death of Alexus Rankins. 

Nina Newton was sentenced to five years in Louisiana Department of Corrections for Accessory after the fact to first degree murder, and ten years in Louisiana Department of Corrections for Obstruction of Justice. 

Judge Davis ordered Nina Newton's sentences to run concurrently.  Rodney Newton was sentenced to three (3) years in the Calcasieu Parish Jail for Accessory after the fact to first degree murder. 

First Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Killingsworth prosecuted the case. 

On July 20, 2011, Sean Newton, Nina and Rodney's son, was sentenced to Life in the Louisiana Department of Corrections without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence for First Degree Murder, twenty years for Obstruction of Justice, and six months in the parish jail with a $500 fine for inciting a riot. 

Judge Davis ordered Sean Newton's sentences to run concurrently.

    East Beauregard Elementary celebrated its annual Career on Wheels Day. Last Friday, the school hosted a huge assortment of vehicles that represent careers within the community. Those vehicles included an ambulance, fire truck, BECI truck, State Trooper motorcycle units, DeRidder Police, Police Jury Dozer, race car, Wildlife and Fisheries truck and boat, drilling rig, a helicopter and more!  The event included an appearance from the radio station and picnics for differ...
