LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The national average for unemployment is roughly 9.1%. But the number of unemployed African Americans is at a rate not seen since Ronald Reagan was President of the United States - 16.2% and climbing. For African American males the number is about 18% (higher in certain cities). In Calcasieu Parish, the number of African Americans unemployed is 10.9%.
The question is why? Is it due to lack of skills? Less education? Better education in schools densely populated by Caucasians? Or is it blatant discrimination?
