LAKE CHARLES, LA-- Completion of construction on Lake Street has been delayed due to uncompleted tasks. The road will not be open on Monday, January 9th as expected.
Mister Edwards, Director of Public Works said a few things still need to be done on the roads and they are still shooting for Lake Street to be open later on during the week of January 9th.
Some of the remaining tasks include paint striping on the road and sealing of road joints.
The construction project on Lake Street was intended to bring improvements to the water, sewer and drainage lines, as well as widen the street to four lanes.
City Administrator John Cardone said that the improvements will benefit the businesses in the area as well as the entire community. However, the construction project has traffic near Lake Street backed up in areas, especially on Canal Street.
Cardone said traffic control officers are stationed in the area to help move the flow of traffic. "If the cars back up more than five on Canal or on Sale Road, they need to start trying to move the traffic a little bit quicker."
Businesses in the area claimed that business has suffered slightly since the construction began, but city officials encourage the community to continue using the businesses despite the construction.
"We want to keep these businesses in business," Cardone said. "Anything we can do to help facilitate that as a city, we will do that."
