Housing grant to move residents off Section 8 waiting list

The following is a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury:

June 24, 2011 – The Louisiana Housing Finance Agency has awarded the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Housing Department a grant for $184,034 to assist those who remain on the Police Jury's waiting list for Section 8 assistance. The grant will be used to fund the Calcasieu Tenant Based Rental Assistance Program (CTBRAP). The purpose of the CTBRAP is to reduce the time many residents must endure to receive the help they need in securing subsidized housing assistance.

The program is expected to go into effect around August 1, 2011.

Under the new program elderly, disabled and homeless residents, who are currently on the Section 8 waiting list for the Police Jury Housing Department will be considered first to receive CTBRA rental assistance until their names reaches the top of the waiting list and transitioned to receive Section 8 assistance. The Parish Housing staff will review the current Section 8 waiting list and contact elderly, disabled, homeless and other qualified applicants in the order they initially applied for assistance. The Police Jury Housing Staff estimates that the average time of assistance most applicants will receive on CTBRA will be 4-6 months.

Tarek Polite, Coordinator of Federal Program Development for the Police Jury said "We are truly excited about this new program, in particular how we are utilizing these funds from the State.  At a time when the Federal Government is continuous cutting the resources they are providing at the local level, the Police Jury has exercised very prudent judgment in seeking out funds to assistance the most vulnerable populations in our community by assisting them with one of life's most basic needs decent, safe, sanitary, and affordable housing".

It's a tug of war that's bound to make some residents in south Lake Charles unhappy.  A proposed townhouse complex has already been approved but there's a request to change how future residents will get in and out. Some believe Country Club Road is the better option, to avoid disrupting quiet neighborhoods in that area. But the realtor says they want to avoid congestion on an already busy road.
