Senior Report: Seniors, Disabled and Veterans get tax break

LAKE ARTHUR, LA (KPLC) -

6/3 UPDATED TO INCLUDE INCOME REQUIREMENTS FOR DISABILITY and VETERANS FREEZES

It's been on the books as early as 2000, but the word has only been trickling out.

Calcasieu Parish Assessor, Wendy Aguillard, speaks about the Special Assessment Level Freezes, "These were put into effect by legislation with the legislature of Louisiana and they were created to help with the tax burden on certain individuals who would fall into those categories".

If you are a homeowner and currently live in the house you own, here's how you may qualify:

For Senior Freezes, you have to be at least 65yrs of age and make no more than $65,891 in 2011.

For Disability Freezes, you have to be 100% disabled showing proof from Social Security office. Also need to show income of no more than $65,891.

For Veterans, you have to be 50% or more disabled showing proof from VA. Also need to show income of no more than $65,891.

Francis Washington and Victor Bean, citizens of Lake Charles, were extremely happy to hear about how these freezes could benefit them tax wise, "It would give me something [extra money] in my pocket, getting some repairs I really need at my house and this would really help me out."

Kathy Dorsey of the Calcasieu Council on Aging says that they will be placing information about the various freezes in their newsletter soon.

If you are interested in getting more information, please call your Parish Assessor's office.  Also note there are various other qualifications including but not limited to widows of seniors and POWs.
