CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-- McNeese softball split a Southland Conference doubleheader against second place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi here Saturday winning the opening game 5-3 in 11 innings and dropping the nightcap 4-1. The split improves the Cowgirls to 23-23 overall and 13-10 in league play. The Islanders drop to 36-15 overall and 19-7 in the SLC. The home loss is only the third of the season for the Islanders as they fall to 27-3 at home.
The Cowgirls picked up seven hits in the opener and were led by Claire Terracina at the plate who picked up two. Katie Roux had one hit and the only extra base hit in the game for the Cowgirls which was a double. Pitcher Kayla Shepherd picked up the complete game victory going the distance and improving to 14-13 overall. Shepherd gave up four hits, one earned run and struck out six In the victory.
The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI single by Molly Guidry that scored Terracina who reached base on a two out single.
The islanders tied the game in the sixth with a single run off a RBI double to left center by Jamise Jackson that scored Caley Jetter who led the inning off with a walk.
Neither team would cross the plate after seven innings, sending the game into extra innings.
The Cowgirls took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th on a Islander error that scored Lindsey Langner. Langner was place on second to begin the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Stacey Conley. The lead wouldn't last as the Islanders tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a two out RBI single by Meagan McKinney to tie the game at two all.
The Cowgirls scored three runs in the 11th and held the Islanders scoreless to win the game. Dani Price was place on second to begin the inning. Price advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Guidry then scored on a RBI bunt single by Katie Shoemaker to give the Cowgirls a 3-2 lead. A double to right center by Roux sent Shumaker to third. A RBI double up the middle by Alanna DiVittorio gave scored Shumaker and Roux to give the Cowgirls a 5-2 lead. The Islanders cut the lead to 5-3 but wouldn't get any closer.
The Islanders came back to win the nightcap 4-1 after taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Cowgirls tied the game 1-1 in the fourth on a RBI double to left center by Shumaker that scored Guidry. The Islanders scored the go-ahead run in the sixth when Sandy Schumann singled down the right field line to score Lauren Dodson and Jackson. The other Islander run came on a single by Cassie Redman that scored Schumann.
The Cowgirls managed only four hits in the game with Shumaker picking up the only extra base hit. And only RBI in the game. Meagan Bond took the complete game loss after giving up five hits, four earned runs, two walks and one strikeout.
