Annual low cost rabies vaccination clinic scheduled

The following is a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury:

April 13, 2011 – The Office of Animal Services will be offering its last drive-thru rabies clinic for 2011 in an effort to prevent the spread of Rabies Infection in Calcasieu Parish. Louisiana State Code requires that all dogs and cats over the age of three months must be vaccinated for rabies and licensed.

Vaccination and licensing rates for spay/neutered animals is $8. Unaltered pets will cost $10.00.  Dogs will need to be on a leash and cats must be in a portable kennel. Pet owners may pay by cash or check. The clinic will be held Saturday, April 16th, from 7am – 1pm at the Sulphur High School Stadium.

Pets are required to wear a license tag in all areas of the Parish once a pet is vaccinated by a licensed Louisiana Veterinarian in Calcasieu Parish. Cat owners are also encouraged to place the tag on a humane breakaway collar.

Please note: residents or groups feeding stray animals should be mindful that they assume ownership of animals under their care. The legal definition of a pet owner is "any person, business or any other legal entity that provides care, harbors, acts as custodian, or permits an animal to remain on or about his premises." In the event someone is bitten, this person or entity could be held responsible.

    No major changes are expected with the forecast for the next few days.  And that means the heat and humidity will remain in place along with a slight chance of rain.  A cold front will arrive later this week and should bring a slight drop in humidity just in time for the weekend.  Tuesday will be warm and humid with morning lows in the mid 60s north of I-10, low 70s along the I-10 corridor, and mid to upper 70s along the coast.

    The first-degree murder trial of Stacy Tyrone Johnson continued Monday.  KPLC's Theresa Schmidt is in the courtroom right now and is live tweeting more information.
