LAFAYETTE – McNeese State dropped its third straight baseball game Tuesday night, bowing to UL Lafayette by a 12-3 score in Lafayette.
The Cowboys, now 17-18 on the season, had jumped on Cajun starter Jordan Nicholson for two runs in the first inning but ULL came back with two of its own in the bottom of that frame, added five in the third and three in the fourth and were off to its 19th victory of the season.
Nicholson held on and went on to complete seven innings on the mound, giving up eight of the Cowboys' 10 hits and another run but capturing his third victory against two setbacks.
McNeese starter Tyler McDonald last only 2.2 innings. In that length of time he gave up six hits, seven runs (only two earned), walked one and struckout one. Five other Cowboys followed him to the mound.
For McDonald it was his first setback in only the second start of his career. He had won a game last week (Grambling).
The Cowboys two runs in the first inning came when Blake Ellender scored on a double play and with Renny Weber driving in Jace Peterson. The other run scored in the seventh inning with Matt Henry doubling to left center and Tyler Park plating him with a single.
ULL had 15 hits in the game, one a home run by Alex Fuslier.
Peterson and Weber were the only Cowboys with more than one hit – both getting two.
Following McDonald to the mound for McNeese were Jaden Dillon who gave up five hits and three runs in one-third of an inning, Phil Parcell who pitched 1.2 innings of two hit, no run ball, John Tatum who went 1.2 innings giving up no hits and one run, Ryan Sampere who pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up a hit and Jordan LeGros who hurled the eighth inning, giving up a hit.
