LAKE CHARLES, La (KPLC-TV) – Dozens of local veterans gathered at the American Legion Post 551 in Lake Charles on Saturday for Veterans Awareness Day.

The veterans not only paid tribute to those who served before them, they also learned about some of the opportunities that were available to them.

A representative from the Louisiana Veterans Business Outreach Center in Jennings informed veterans about the services his office provides, like helping them to start a business or obtain a loan.

American Legion Post 551 Officer Roy Weldon also gave veterans tips on filing and winning V.A. claims.

The day's service started with a tribute to the Four Chaplains.

The army chaplains paid the ultimate sacrifice after saving soldiers on the USS Dorchester after it sank during World War II.
