January 19, 2011 – Sulphur Fire Department
SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) - Members of the Sulphur Fire Department are basking in the glow of being the best in the state. The State Fire Marshal's office recently gave them the "Fire Department of the Year" award. Fire Chief Danny Dupre, needless to say, is proud.
"Hopefully this will help us strive to do a better job," said Dupre. "There are some things I think we are the best that we can be. But we're going to continue that work and strive to do a better job with the things where we aren't the best."
The Sulphur department was not only cited for its high fire rating and community fire prevention programs but other areas as well.
"Whether it's through the Mutual Aid Association, fires, haz-mats, different types of emergencies," said fire captain Brad McKelvy. "We also have a critical incident stress management team. Several individuals have been trained to deal with critical incident stress."
District Fire Chief Matt Frey has been a Sulphur firefighter for 28 years and is a clown in the department's fire prevention education program at schools.
"It's fun," said Frey. "The objective was to make learning fun. We weren't expecting ourselves to have as much fun as we did. We dressed up like clowns. We bring out the program. We get our criteria from the NFPA. They tell us what we have to teach each year to the schools."
For their efforts, we're making members of the Sulphur Fire Department this week's KPLC Billy Navarre Hometown Patriots.
