Wilkins trial starting in State District Court

LAKE CHARLES, LA. (KPLC) - It's coming up on seven years since Robert Wilkins allegedly murdered Tony Fontenot at the Choupique Boat Launch in Carlyss.  At long last, Wilkins trial is underway in State District Court.

Wilkins is charged with second degree murder.  The case was bogged down in a quagmire of legal wrangling for a number of years.  Judge Wilford Carter was to preside over it but he was ultimately recused.  Two special prosecutors have been brought in due to possible conflict and recusal issues involving both  the court and prosecutors.

The case is now before Judge Kent Savoie and jury selection is expected to get underway shortly.  The two special prosecutors from  West Baton Rouge Parish are Tony Clayton and Marty Mailey.

It was September 21, 2004 when Wilkins allegedly stabbed Fontenot.  Fonenot, who was 32 years old at the time, was found dead of a stab wound to the neck.
