Fatal crash in Jeff Davis Parish

JEFF DAVIS PARISH, LA (KPLC) - A California man traveling on I-10 westbound is the first fatality of the year in Southwest Louisiana.

State Troopers worked the 1 vehicle crash and said that around 12:23 a.m. near milepost 53, 41-year-old Joseph Gaushell hit a horse that was walking in his travel lane. The horse rolled over the hood of his vehicle and struck the windshield, killing it. Gaushell was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Troopers determined that the horse belonged to 52-year-old Nathaniel Lyons of Welsh and they say Lyons had improperly secured the horse in his yard. Lyons was arrested for Negligent homicide and booked into Jeff Davis Jail.

Standard toxicology samples were taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
