LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC-TV) – The day after Christmas is traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the year, as many stores try to get rid of holiday products while offering sales on big ticket items like clothes and electronics.

In Lake Charles, shoppers were also enjoying the after Christmas sales. Local stores reported moderate to strong sales on Sunday.

Most items at Old Navy were 60 percent off.

Store manager Monica Martin said sales were slow on Sunday morning but picked up in the afternoon. Martin said many customers were probably at church services.

Over at Target, sales also picked up as the day unfolded.

As for returns, both retailers reported a steady stream of customers who needed to return or exchange a gift, however the lines were not as long as they were last year.

Target shopper Timothy Nelson said he was interested in stocking up on holiday items for next year.

"I buy them for cheap after Christmas and hold on to them until next year," said Nelson. "It saves me money. "

Nationwide, the National Retail Federation estimates holiday sales were up 3.3 percent over last year, the biggest increase since 2006.
