Former state legislator Margaret Welsh Lowenthal died Saturday in a Houston hospital.

Lowenthal served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1980 to 1989 and then made an unsuccessful run for congress. Before that, she was one of the first women ever elected to the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.

Representative Vic Stelly who succeeded Lowenthal says, as a legislator, she did a good job for Southwest Louisiana -- working especially hard when Sam Houston High burned down and extra money was needed.

There's a memorial service at 10:30 Saturday morning at the worship center of Trinity Baptist Church. Hixon Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
