Port Barre to host vigil for school bus crash victims

By Michael Addison - email

PORT BARRE, LA (KPLC) - The Town of Port Barre is holding a vigil Friday night for the victims of last week's deadly school bus accident.

Officials say the 7 p.m. vigil is being held in remembrance of 5-year-old Karen Stoute, who died in the wreck.

The vigil is also to support the recovery of 15-year-old Colby Richard, bus driver and Mayor Gil Savoie and the 19 other students who were injured when a tractor-trailer plowed into the back of the bus.

St. Landry Parish Schools Superintendent Michael Nassif says J.B. Hunt representatives have formally apologized and turned over the tractor-trailer's black box data, which indicated the driver did not apply his brakes before colliding with the school bus.
