Two dead after crash on Highway 27 near DeQuincy

DEQUINCY, LA (KPLC) - Troopers with Louisiana State Police continue to investigate a two-vehicle crash that took the lives of two people and injured three others on Thursday morning.

The accident happened on Louisiana Highway 27 near Holbrook Park Road south of DeQuincy in Calcasieu Parish.

According to State Police, a 2009 Ford F-350 driven by 26-year-old Frank Angelle, Jr. of Opelousas, LA was traveling north on Louisiana Highway 27 when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 1999 Ford F-150 driven by 36-year-old Anthony L. Jackson of DeQuincy. Both drivers died.

There were three passengers traveling with Angelle who were also injured.  Keith W. Mackmel, 26, of Ellisville, MS received serious injuries and remains in critical condition in an area hospital.  Dusty Bass, 24, of Laurel, MS received moderate injuries and also remains hospitalized.  Timothy Bass, 26, also of Laurel, received minor injuries and was released from a local hospital.
No passengers were traveling with Jackson.

State Police Sergeant James Anderson says they are investigating.  "We're going to try to get to the bottom of what caused this. We know that one of the vehicles crossed the center line. We're going to try to determine why. We're going to try to determine if impairment was possibly a factor in the crash. This is routine. Anytime we work a crash where someone was killed or seriously injured we obtain a routine toxicology sample."Samples  obtained from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Anderson says their crash reconstruction experts were at the scene. "We use equipment that's known as a Nikon total station. That equipment allows for a computer generated diagram to be made of the crash scene and measurements and other data will be inputted to determine the speeds of the vehicles as well as to help us pinpoint a cause."

The tragedy is a reminder how suddenly a severe crash can happen and how quickly lives can be lost. Says Anderson, "It's a reminder that you need to be careful while you're driving. You need to ensure that you're driving on the right side of the road, that you're driving in a safe and prudent manner."

Troop D has now investigated 21 fatal crashes this year in which 25 people died.

Mostly cloudy skies MondayMostly cloudy skies Monday

Overnight we will have partly cloudy skies. There is a chance for fog to develop again overnight, but only if the wind calms down enough. Temperatures will be mild with lows in the middle 60s. Monday, we will have mostly cloudy skies. Throughout the day, we could also see a couple areas with drizzle. No significant rain is expected. So, if you see any light showers, it will pass by quickly. Temperatures will still be warm with highs in the lower 80s. Tuesday should be a great day!
