Kindergarten student dies from school bus wreck injuries

LAFAYETTE, LA (KPLC) - One of the students injured after an 18-wheeler hit a school bus near Port Barre on Friday morning died Monday.

Officials with the Louisiana State Police in Lafayette reports that five-year-old Karen Stoute, a Kindergarten student, died from her injuries just before noon on Monday.

Stoute was reportedly taken to a Lafayette hospital in critical condition Friday morning after the bus - carrying 21 students - was hit by a big rig on Highway 190 near Port Barre on Friday morning.

One other student - a 15-year-old boy - remains in critical condition at a Lafayette hospital. Troopers also say that an 8-year-old child originally listed in critical condition was released from the hospital with moderate injuries.

Troopers say the crash remains under investigation and that charges relating to the crash are pending the outcome of the investigation.
