LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The newly established Hector San Miguel Memorial Fund honored political columnist Jim Beam as its first ever award recipient on Thursday.
The award, granted in memory of the former American Press reporter's honor, was presented to Beam at a luncheon at L'auberge du Lac. Political writer John Maginnis delivered the keynote address.
Nominees for the award had to meet the criteria of outstanding achievement in journalism and/or relentless pursuit of the truth and must have made a substantial positive impact on Southwest Louisiana.
The fund was set up in memory of Hector San Miguel, who lost his battle with leukemia in December 2009 at the age of 51. He is remembered as a passionate journalist, faithful friend and dedicated husband and father. Through hard-hitting investigative pieces, Hector earned numerous state and regional awards and the position of City Editor at the American Press.
Hector's wife Theresa, an award winning journalist at KPLC, was also honored at the luncheon.
