SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) - The Maplewood Hollywood Lions Club hosted  the 17th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Sulphur Parks and Recreations (SPAR) center on Thursday.

The organizations involved with the dinner include the Lion's Club, different charities, churches, and restaurants.

Organizers began preparing the community feast as early as 4 o'clock on Thursday morning.

Volunteers said they can expect to serve somewhere between 800 and 1,000 residents every year.

Ernest Barkate has been volunteering to serve meals at the dinner for 16 years now. Barkate said not only does he enjoy serving meals but he also enjoys seeing the same people come through the line every year.

"A lot of these people you don't see but once a year and it's good because it's good to get people to come together," said Barkate.

Other Lion's Club members and volunteers said the dinner is also a great opportunity to instill community values in the younger generations.

"You see the young ones here enjoying it, they're also going to be the older ones serving someday," said Gerrit Lawrence, a past Lion's Club president. "Our values in Sulphur are faith, family, and community."

The community enjoyed a game of electronic bingo following the dinner portion of the event. Residents had the opportunity to win an assortment of different prizes donated by various organizations.
