LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – Three men were arrested on Tuesday night after a State Police investigation into a phishing scam.

Last week, detectives with the Lake Charles office of the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigation responded to a tip that UPS was delivering packages to vacant homes in the Lake Charles area that contained computer equipment.

Officials say the items purchased were charged to numerous victims whose identities were compromised from a technique called phishing.  Victims were sent fraudulent emails directing unwitting computer users to phony internet sites to obtain sensitive personal data without their knowledge.

Troopers reportedly conducted surveillance operations which provided valuable information.

On Tuesday night, troopers arrested 25-year-old Tuan Anh Nguyen, 20-year-old Giang Vang Nguyen, and 22-year-old Tri Van Le - all of Lake Charles.  The three were arrested for felony theft as well as conspiracy to commit felony theft.

They were all booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. The investigation continues.
