LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The 1% DeQuincy sales tax renewal has passed. In a 76% to 24% vote, DeQuincy residents have overwhelmingly said they would rather pay a 1% sales tax than have their sewage rates rise upwards of $40.

Currently, DeQuincy residents pay $8 for sewage service, a low cost Mayor Lawrence Henagan said would not be possible without this 25 year tax.

"I want to thank the folks for supporting us on this thing. What it actually means, is we will be able to keep our sewer rates down. We have so many people here on a fixed income, and the older people. You worry about those sort of things. It will keep costs down for them, and they will be able to continue that way of life that they are used to. We will be able to continue to give them a good service," said Mayor Lawrence Henagan.
