Ponthieux defeats Scheufens in Iowa mayor race

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Carol Ponthieux has defeated incumbent mayor C. J. Scheufens to win the Iowa mayoral race.

Ponthieux, a retired school teacher and former city councilwoman, defeated Scheufens 458 to 409 votes.

Ponthieux said she plans on working with the Iowa City Council to plan a yearly budget, make repairs on the street and sewer system and establish a better communication policy with the citizens.

A 1967 graduate of McNeese State University, Ponthieux taught for 25 years at J.J. Watson Middle School.

Married to Wilbert A. Ponthieux for 39 years, she has three children: Vicki, Tina and Wilbert III

This will actually be Ponthieux's second time to serve as mayor. She previously served as acting mayor for 9 months after former Mayor O'Brien was called to active duty after 9/11.

Ponthieux will take office on January 1st.
