LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - It was the biggest game of the year, and the most trying week leading up to it, but the St. Louis Saints were able to beat Sam Houston 37-20 to win the District 5-4A title.
Late Monday evening the Saints legendary head coach Mike Johns suffered a heart attack and needed emergency surgery Tuesday afternoon.
Johns was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon, but could not be in attendance to watch his team bring home the district championship. Each player and coach had "MJ" patches and stickers on their helmets.
St. Louis jumped up 13-0 quickly and never looked back to hold off the Broncos for the victory.
The other Thursday football game was a tight contest between Oberlin and Hamilton Christian. The Tigers were able to get the win 36-30 in the last minutes to improve their record to 9-0 and clinch at least a share of the district title.
