DEQUINCY, LA (KPLC) - On Tuesday, DeQuincy residents will have to choose between renewing a 1% sales tax, or a significantly higher bill each month.
The sales tax that will appear on the ballot is a tax that DeQuincy residents have been paying for nearly thirty years. The tax generates nearly $500,000 per year, and is used to operate and maintain the DeQuincy sewer system.
City officials are saying if the tax fails, residents will be forced to go from paying $8 a month, to upwards of $35 each month.
According to DeQuincy City Hall, surrounding cities are charging between $17 and $25 a month for their sewage service.
Officials say the reason DeQuincy's sewage rate is so low is because of the 1% sales tax.
