WELSH, LA (KPLC) - A Sulphur man died in a one vehicle crash on Interstate 10 westbound near Welsh on Tuesday around 11 a.m.
Louisiana State Police responded to the scene. They say the preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Ford pickup driven by 61-year-old Elwood Prater, Jr. of Sulphur was traveling west on Interstate 10 when the truck he was driving started to run off of the highway.
Reportedly, Prater overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle before running off the roadway again, flipping the vehicle multiple times. The vehicle came to rest on its side between the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 and the north service road.
Prater, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was wearing a seatbelt, but he suffered fatal injuries as a result of the vehicle continuing to flip over.
Prater was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say excessive speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Standard toxicology and blood alcohol tests are pending.
The crash remains under investigation.
