Volunteers revitalize home damaged by Rita

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC-TV) – A group of volunteers from a church in Netherland, Texas spent much of their Saturday in Lake Charles helping to revitalize a home for a victim of Hurricane Rita.

Abigail Green, a single mother of four, tried as best she could to make the repairs herself. She managed to have the roof replaced and made minor repairs. But soon money became a problem.

Thanks to the volunteer group Rebuilding Together Calcasieu and Billy Navarre, money is a problem no more.

"We are here trying to repair and restore so she can finally move back into her home," said Adreanna Early, a volunteer coordinator with Rebuilding Together Calcasieu.

On Saturday, ten volunteers with Wesley United Methodist Church in Netherland, Texas helped out with the sub-flooring. This marked the group's second trip to Lake Charles to help out with repairs for the house.

"We are trying to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ and we just want to do what we can to contribute," said Sheila Davis, a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. "Ms. Green has been out of her home since Hurricane Rita, which is about five years and she wants to be in her home so badly. We just want to do whatever we can to help her out."

Volunteers hope to have the home finished next weekend.
