WELSH, LA (KPLC-TV) – Visitation has begun for the MSU college freshman who died after she was hit by a vehicle while walking to class on Monday.
Ashlea Richard, 19, passed away on Tuesday.
Visitation services will run until 8 p.m. Saturday at Hixson Funeral Home in Welsh. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m.
Visitation continues on Sunday starting at 8 a.m. at Hixson Funeral Home and then moves over to the First Baptist Church of Welsh until Richard's funeral at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Friends and former co-workers of Richard at the Welsh Dairy Queen are also remembering her. A picture of Richard hangs on the front door of the store. Her picture and obituary is also at the counter inside the store.
The death of Richard has refocused attention on the dangers students face at the intersection of McNeese and Common, the area where Richard was struck by a vehicle.
Students said the roadway is in need of a safer crosswalk.
Students 7 News spoke with said it's just easier for them to jaywalk across the street rather than use the crosswalk currently in place, because that crosswalk has no lights to inform them of when it's safe to walk.
The university has started to crack down on jaywalkers with big fines.
