Pedestrian hit by motorist near McNeese campus

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – Lake Charles Police say a female student hit by a passing vehicle near the campus of McNeese State University on Monday morning is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.

Officials with McNeese identified the student as Ashlea Richard, a freshman from Welsh.

The accident happened around 7:30 Monday morning at the corner of W. McNeese and Common streets. This area is reportedly frequently crossed by McNeese Students who park in the Cowboy Stadium parking lot.

Authorities say they do not believe the driver was impaired, but standard toxicology tests were performed and results are pending.

In a statement, McNeese president Dr. Philip Williams said, "The issue of adequate, and highly visible, crosswalks on the major streets surrounding the McNeese campus is a major concern. We are working closely with appropriate city and state officials to pursue the best solution to provide a safe pathway for our students."
