JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) - A Southern Baptist preacher is walking across the state of Louisiana in pursuit of helping to save souls by using the soles of his own feet.

Rick Hagans, a Southern Baptist minister from Alabama, is a part of the "Soles for Souls" ministry that raises money for 10 pairs of shoes for every mile each member walks across the country.

For the last month Hagans has walked all over the state Louisiana and completed almost 30 miles on Highway 90 in between Jennings and Lake Charles on Friday.

"This is what I call my 500 mile sermon," said Hagans. "I want to be like Jesus, get out of my office, and meet people right where they live."

Pastor Hagans said this is something he felt led to do after going on a mission trip to Mexico where a little boy asked him for a pair of shoes.

"I told him I didn't have any shoes but I'll give you my word and I'll come back and bring you some shoes," said Hagans.

Since then he has walked in 34 different states and raised money for thousands of shoes for people in Mexico, India, and Haiti.

"If the Lord gives me enough strength and time maybe I'll walk across all 50 states," said Hagans.

In addition to raising money for "Soles for Souls," Hagans said the walk is also an opportunity to minister to folks he meets on his journey.

"I feel like Jesus spent all his time out on the highways," said Hagans. "The old saying is it's not your talk that matters but your walk.

Pastor Hagans plans to make it to the Texas state line sometime next week.
