LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - On Wednesday the Lake Charles city council unanimously voted to approve the 2010-2011 city budget. Last week the proposed budget was introduced to the city council and the public for feedback.
Because of the low sales tax revenues the city has collected over the past couple of years, the recently approved budget is called a "stand still" budget. According to city officials, no new spending, and a reduction in vacant city positions was necessary. But, despite the cut in spending the city of Lake Charles is still projecting a $4 million deficit in the upcoming fiscal year.
"This is an unusual time, as far as the city is concerned. And, that is in large part because of the decline in sales tax revenue," said Lake Charles Mayor, Randy Roach.
