Pithon Coulee improvements project begins Friday

The following is a news release from the City of Lake Charles:

The Pithon Coulee Hurricane Surge Protection Improvements Project, at Bord du Lac Dr. just west of its intersection with Lakeshore Dr., is scheduled to begin today, Friday, September 3.

This is a partnership project with Gravity Drainage District #4 and the City.  The project consists of hurricane surge protection improvements that will slightly elevate the area and includes the reconstruction of a portion of Bord du Lac Dr. and the adjacent public lands to complete the Lakefront Promenade.  The Pithon Coulee Hurricane Surge Protection Improvements Project will connect the north end of the existing Gravity Drainage District #4 control structure with the existing elevated features of Bord du Lac Park.

The project will require the temporary closure of Bord du Lac Dr. at its intersection with Lake Shore Dr. beginning September 15 and may require its continued closure through the scheduled completion date of March 1, 2011.

Motorists should consider alternate routes from Lakeshore Dr., such as the north entrance to Bord du Lac Dr.

The contractor for the project is HD Truck & Tractor, LLC and the contract amount is $556,406.90. Funding includes a $180,000 contribution from Gravity Drainage District #4 with the remaining funds coming from the City Bond Issue.  The project includes the leasing of private property at the southwest corner of Bord du Lac Drive and Lakeshore Dr.
