Second Amendment sales tax holiday starts today

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC-TV) – The 2010 Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is this weekend, September 3rd, 4th and 5th.

This means there will be no local or state sales tax on purchases of a wide range of hunting supplies, including guns, ammunition, knives and other accessories.

Local gun vendors spent most of Friday, setting up for the Lake Charles Gun and Knife Show, which coincides with the tax-free holiday this year. This is only the second time both events have occurred on the same weekend.

The gun show will take place in a different venue in the Civic Center this year.

"We moved it over here to the coliseum this time because we had about 50 extra tables compared to what we normally have," said Lake Charles Gun and Knife Show promoter Richard Presutti. "We'll have a couple of thousand people here this weekend."

Angela Bernard with LA Quality Firearms, Inc. in Abbeville makes regular visits to the Lake Charles Gun and Knife Show.

"We've been coming to this show five to six years maybe," said Bernard.

Bernard said the fact that both the gun show and the tax-free holiday on hunting supplies fall on the same weekend is good news.

"It helps promote hunting and fishing and the sale of guns," she said. "You'll have on a tax-free weekend a new customer who comes in and realizes they don't have to pay taxes. [They] will go ahead and buy."

The Lake Charles Gun and Knife Show runs Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An upper level disturbance passed over Southwest Louisiana Tuesday and that kept clouds around the area and even a few sprinkles during the morning.  But as expected, rain was very limited and that will remain true for the rest of the week.  Temperatures were held a few degrees cooler during the afternoon due to the clouds, but it was still rather warm with most areas reaching the low 90s.
