BEAUMONT, TX (KPLC) - A chemical spill Sunday shut down both east and west bound lanes near Beaumont, and authorities now say that the interstate could be closed until Wednesday as officials offload the chemicals from the damaged tanker.
A big rig carrying the chemical Isobutene was involved in an accident with another car heading in the same direction. The crash caused the potentially dangerous substance to spill onto the roadway.
Texas highway officials say the shutdown is a safety precaution and because of the complicated nature of the cleanup, the closure is expected to last until Wednesday.
Drivers traveling west into Texas will need to detour using Highway 90. Other motorists coming into Louisiana from Houston will need to detour on to Texas State Highway 73 to Port Arthur.
A one-mile radius surrounding the site was evacuated over the weekend because of the accident.
