LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - All of the suspense is now over.
The man who we thought would be McNeese State's starting quarterback now has the job.
Jacob Bower will be the Cowboys' starting quarterback in 2010. Head coach Matt Viator made the announcement at a press conference.
Three other quarterbacks were vying for the job. Freshman Cody Stroud, Sophomore Zack O'Quinn, and Sophomore Blake Barousse will all be backups for MSU.
Bower has just one year of eligibility left. He's a transfer from the University of Tulsa and he's the only quarterback on McNeese's active roster who has any playing experience at the collegiate level.
I asked Bower if there was ever a moment where he knew the starting job would be his.
"You try not to think that way," Bower said. "I think when you get overconfident, that's when you fall. You just try to stay humble. After the last scrimmage, I probably felt that way with my performance but you try not to get overconfident or cocky. Just keep working hard and trying to get better every day."
Viator says the biggest reason for the decision is simple.
"Right now, it gives us the best chance to win," Viator said. "I think he has some maturity. I think he's performed really well in the scrimmages. He's done really good in practice since we started. I just kind of wanted to see how he would do in our scrimmages and how he would hold up against our number one defense and how he would handle himself. I think he's done pretty well."
McNeese's 2010 season opener will be on September 4th against the Lamar Cardinals.
