JENNINGS, LA (KPLC-TV) - Officials believe a lightning strike is responsible for catching three large storage tanks on fire on Friday afternoon.

The fire reportedly started around 3:00 p.m. as a thunderstorm moved through the area.

The tanks, which sit near the intersections of Highway 26 and 1126 south of Jennings, belong to Omni Energy.

The company said a couple of workers were at the site when the bolt of lightning struck and the tanks caught fire, but neither of the workers were hurt.

Each of the tanks holds about 1,000 barrels of saltwater and oil.

"[We] used foam to put the fire out. It took about 35 minutes to extinguish," said Jeff Davis District 2 Fire Chief Tim Landry.

A manager for the company said insurance adjusters will survey the damage next week.

The manager said the cost for replacing the tanks is likely to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
