Consumers take advantage of the 2010 Louisiana Sales Tax Holiday

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Tax Free weekend brought shoppers from all over to Prien Lake Mall this weekend.

"We're over here shopping and I ran into a tax free weekend, so I had to buy some stuff for myself," said Amy Worsham, who was shopping on Saturday.

Back to school sales are really what got Amy excited.

"I work at the school, so I need school clothes, and this is a great opportunity to get them for a great price," said Worsham.

Amy was not the only one preparing for school, JC Penney has seen a big chunk of their sales going to shoppers looking for the same thing.

"Usually on these types of days they're coming in and looking for specific types of things, and it's time for back to school, so the big things are school uniforms and things for school," said David Stanley, store manager for JC Penney.

Tax Free Weekend is not only good for the customers, but great for the store, because of the heavy foot traffic it can bring to the mall.

"This is like almost another Christmas time for us, so this is a big sales peak for us and we're real excited," said Stanley.

You may think all the traffic would be stressful for store managers, but David Stanley thinks Tax Free Weekend is just the opposite.

"It's always more fun when there's plenty of traffic in the store, everybody gets real excited, everybody is in a better mood, better frame of mind, and it just makes the days and the workdays go faster," said Stanley.

By the end of the day some shoppers could be just as exhausted as those working.

"I'll shop til I drop, that's me every day," said Worsham.

Items not included in the tax exemption include vehicles, most meals, laundry services and purchases of taxable services like hotels and sporting events.
