New trial for Shannon Bertrand

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Wednesday was supposed to be set aside for the sentencing of Shannon Bertrand. Back in 2007, after the defense waived their right to a trial by jury, Judge Wilford Carter found Bertrand guilty of the murder of Marcus Mayo.

Before Judge carter was able to sentence Bertrand, his attorney Todd Clemens filed a motion for a new trial on the merits that some the prosecutions witnesses lied under oath. Judge Carter himself admitted that he may have been prejudicially influenced by a taped statement form one of the witnesses.

Judge Carter, after hearing basis for the new trial motion, granted their request.
