July 28, 2010 – Sulphur Mayor's Armed Forces Committee
SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) - It's going to be a busy year for the new Mayor's Armed Forces Committee in Sulphur. While their number one goal is to get as many new members as they can get, they also want to let the public know they're around.
"It's just uniting citizens of Sulphur with the military," said Mayor Chris Duncan. "Whether you're retired in the service or on reserve, it's a way of showing our support for our armed services."
Donna Brown is a Navy veteran and secretary/treasurer of the committee. She says they can also assist area veterans with any questions they may have about benefits.
"A lot of us have many experiences in many areas," said Brown. "We can lead them to the right people and help with medical issues or any benefits that they don't know they deserve or have no inkling of where to go to get them."
Plans are underway to have a Veterans Day ceremony November 6th, which will feature a 200-plus voice community choir singing patriotic songs.
"I think everyone wants to celebrate our country," said committee member Lionel Noel. "The great country we have and just also to say thank you to our veterans serving currently and those that have served in the past."
For their efforts in helping veterans in Sulphur, we honor the Mayor's Armed Forces Committee as this week's KPLC Billy Navarre Hometown Patriots.
