LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – Creepy crawlers love invading homes in Louisiana. According to a recent national study among homeowners, Louisiana ranked second among the "buggiest" states, but this news does not come as a surprise to some exterminators.
"Not at all, not at all, especially here in Southwest Louisiana," said Robert Soileau, branch manager with J&J Exterminating Company.
Soileau says the heat and humidity are a recipe that bugs just can't resist. So what's bugging most homeowners right now? Ants.
"Fire ants are one of the most common ants that people call in about. We also have carpenter ants and sugar ants and different types," said Soileau.
The other culprits infiltrating homes in Southwest Louisiana are termites.
Soileau stated, "We're just now finishing up our yearly swarm season with termites, and that's when people usually see the influx of termites."
The swarm season is during the spring, but that doesn't mean termites are taking a break now.
"They're still there and they're still doing damage," said Soileau.
Treating a termite or ant infestation can be costly, but you could end up paying thousands of dollars if the problem is left untreated. Quite often it's best not to make treating a problem a "do it yourself" project.
Soileau stated, "You're out there just buying stuff off the shelf and going out there and squirting around, you may end up causing more problems than good if you don't know what you're doing."
With termites, ants and any other insect, you can take steps to prevent a problem with like having proper weather stripping and by keeping wood outside from leaning up against your home.
