ELTON, LA (KPLC-TV) - A teenage boy died on Saturday morning, after the truck he was driving was struck by a train near Elton.
Josh Bertrand, 19, of Elton, died at the scene, according to authorities.
Investigators said around 10 A.M., a westbound Union Pacific train struck the Ford Ranger pickup in a private drive on Liberty Cemetery Road, just north of U.S. Highway 190. The train carried the vehicle nearly a mile before coming to a stop.
Authorities do not believe alcohol played any role in the accident, however toxicology tests on the driver and engineer have been ordered as a precaution.
According to Bertrand's Facebook page, he was set to start classes as a freshman at McNeese State University this fall.
The railroad crossing where Bertrand's vehicle was struck did not have a railroad crossing gate.
The incident remains under investigation by the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office and Union Pacific Railroad Police.
