Cleanup worker extradited to Texas

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd says Texas authorities have picked up an oil spill cleanup worker wanted in a local slaying.

Byrd tells The Mississippi Press that Lorenzo Sam was arrested Monday night on a barge south of Petit Bois Island. Byrd says Sam was picked up by Ford Bend County, Texas, deputies on Tuesday.

Fort Bend sheriff's department spokeswoman Terriann Carlson says Sam is a suspect in the July 7 shooting death of Leesa Nascimento, a flower shop owner in Sugar Land, Texas.

Officials with BP LLC and the cleanup subcontractor, Off Shore Staffing Services of Acadiana, who hired Sam in Lafayette, La., say they cooperated with authorities.
