Life sentence for man who tried to disarm police officer

LAKE CHARLES, LA. (KPLC) - A violent offender who some believe would have killed a Lake Charles Police officer, if help had help not arrived when it did, will spend the rest of his life in prison.

According to testimony during his trial, Alex Pappilion threw police officer Rebecca Reed down a flight of stairs and was trying to remove her gun belt when back up got there.

Because of Pappilion's prior criminal record Judge Mike Canaday was able to impose life in prison and did so. Lake Charles Police Chief Don Dixon says Pappilion deserves to spend life in prison.  "You got somebody who's a two time convicted felon violent crimes, who tries to disarm a police officer, no doubt in my mind if backup had not arrived when it did, he would have attempted to kill Officer Reed, who has been sentenced to life, he deserved to get life. We do not want predators out on the streets, and sometimes we get frustrated because we do our jobs and then they kind of slip through the crack in the court system, well today justice was found."

Pappilion was eligible to get life in prison because he's now a three time violent offender.
