Man accused of threatening La. lawmaker

CARENCRO, La. (AP) - Carencro police have arrested a 33-year-old Breaux Bridge man after he allegedly threatened a state representative who he claimed was having an affair with his girlfriend.

Police say John Wesley Snelling allegedly demanded $20,000 from state Rep. Bobby Badon of Carencro in exchange for his promise not to go public with e-mails he claimed proved the affair.

The arrest affidavit said Snelling allegedly told Badon he would send the e-mails to Baton Rouge, then kill him unless he received $20,000.

Snelling was arrested Monday on one count of threatening a public official.

Police Chief Carlos Stout tells The Advocate that investigators contacted Snelling's girlfriend, who told them the allegations were false.

It was not immediately known whether Snelling has an attorney.
