Snakes - friend or foe?

By Brandon Troullier - bio | email

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Snakes have a tendency to cause fear in those who come in contact with them.  To keep people educated on them, Alton Puckett from the LSU Ag Center has been hosting seminars for the past 15 years, giving locals some peace of mind.

He says, "what we're trying to accomplish is to make the students aware of the difference between poisonous and non poisonous snakes....we do have poisonous snakes and it's best the kids have some exposure to that."

From the eyes to the tails, he compared the differences and gave the children a better understanding of how important it is to leave snakes alone.  If you see one, let it go its own way, but if you happen to get bitten by one, this is what he says to do.

"Step back and then step away, then get to a hospital, some type of medical facility where the bite could be checked..."

But the bottom line is if you don't bother them, they won't bother you.

7 poisonous snakes in LA:

1)Texas Coral Snake  2)Copperhead  3)Cottonmouth  4)Pygmy Rattlesnake  5)Canebrake Rattlesnake  6)Harlequin Coral Snake  7)Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
